The November-December 2017 issue of the American Scientist contains Daniel Silver's article The New Language of Mathematics that features the Quon Language. In his essay Silver describes an extensive part of the story of pictorial representations in mathematics, including a discussion of planar tangles (a two-dimensional language introduced by Vaughan Jones). Our picture language project at Harvard includes the study of two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and higher-dimensional languages.
